So What is Misty Fuse? you ask….
“Mistyfuse®
Use paper-less Mistyfuse® for all weights of fabric from velvets and cottons to delicate tulles and organzas. It’s a dream to work with—it handles well, is incredibly sheer, doesn’t add bulk to your fused piece and bonds firmly once cooled. And since there is no added adhesive, it will never gum up your scissors or quilting needles. Each package comes with simple instructions for easy fusing with no waste. Mistyfuse White is perfect for fusing with any fabric.”
(shhhhh. I stole that straight from the website. :P) http://www.mistyfuse.com/
I first discovered this amazing substance a few years ago. A customer had come to the LQS where I played around worked, and was looking for an alternative to pin basting her quilts. ( Seriously, aren’t we all?) So the owner showed her Misty Fuse. The customer loved it so much, she was back the next day to order several bolts. Something about the whole situation just made me want to try it. This is NOT the only use for this product and I plan to show you more fabulous things you can do, but for now, enjoy the idea of painless basting your quilts.
I wish you could feel how light the quilt stays, even with two layers of fusible in the quilt. Better yet, it will not affect your needle in any way. No thud, thud, thud as you are sewing, no chunks of fusible gluey residue. Misty Fuse is a wonderful fusible web product and I can not sing it’s praises loud enough! In fact, I want you to know just how fabulous this stuff is… I am GIVING AWAY 5 YARDS OF MISTY FUSE to one of my readers. Here’s what you have to do….

This is going to sound a little silly, but……..I’ve always thought Misty Fuse was just for applique. I never really looked into the product. Kelly over at I Have A Notion has been having a month full of giveaways and I think she offered Misty Fuse as a prize. I’m going to have to go back and check it out – you should too! Anyway, I’ve just started free motion quilting on my little Janome and have been wondering how to baste a larger quilt without pins. Now I don’t have to research anymore! Really, I’m not just saying this because I want to win! Thank you for introducing this to us 🙂 Sorry about all that rambling! 5 FREE yards would be great!

I have tried crawling around on the floor to layer my quilts properly and smoothly, tried basting, tried clipping, pinning and spraying. All of these ended up putting me in a chair with a heating pad on my back! Misty quilt sounds WONDERFUL! I would love to be a winnter and have 5 yards to use on my next quilting project which is a small quilt to go in a craft show that will benefit our local YWCA.
Happy Quilting!

Hi, I have never used Misty Fuse before and it sounds like a wonderful solution to basting without pins. I am curious, however, if you use this fusible, is it still possible to wash the quilt? Would this be an option for a bed quilt or would I still need to resort to basting pins? I have been told that using fusible webs such as WonderUnder and SteamASeam negates the option of washing the quilt.
Comment by kat — April 6, 2010 @ 11:13 am |

Hi!
Your family is just so beautiful. Congrats on #9! OMG I had a serious big gulp of coffee imagining your household. Mine is 2 young boys and I often think its a zoo. Not anymore! LOL. Would love to be a fly on your wall at dinnertime and hear the conversations! Thanks for the info about misty fuse. I have never heard about it, but it’s on my list. Have you ever used it for larger projects, like a lap quilt?
Hope you’re having a fabulous week. I sure enjoyed reading about your family!

What a fabulously easier way of quilting and specially since I hand quilt
this would make life so much easier.

I have just discovered your Blog tonight. I put in a search for bloggers in Alberta, where I was born, raised and still live and I came upon your blog. I will definitely be subscribing (when I figure out how). I absolutely love misty fuse and have never even thought of using instead of pins or 505 for basting! I have just finished piecing a quilt for the Heritage PArk Quilt show and I have just decided I am going to try using misty fuse to baste it! Also, I am very excited because I did not realize you could buy it by the roll. Great post!

Looks like a great product for quilters. I was wondering how cost effective it is too? Is it easy to lay out for a king size quilt?

Here is the comment I left on the Misty Fuse Facebook site after I became a friend…
Debi Rodriguez: Misty Fuse sounds like it would work to fuse pieces of batting together, too. I don’t like whip stitching two smaller pieces of batting together, it’s a PITA! lol
Comment by Debi R. — April 10, 2010 @ 12:29 pm |
I think I already Twitter with you but I’ll check on that…

Never thought of it for basting a quilt. Actually I’m taking a workshop in May with Esterita Austin who is responsible for developing Misty Fuse. Wonder if she’s aware of this use of it. Will have to ask.
