Cut square once on the diagonal to yield TWO triangles.
Cut ONE square (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inches.
Brown Suede Large Floral –

Sea Glass Green Medallions –
Cut ONE square (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inches.
Cut FOUR squares (4 1/2) X (4 1/2) inchs.

Piecing Block Nine

The first step is to create the center quarter square triangle.
Fabrics needed for this step are:
TWO (4 7/8) inch triangles of rose small floral, and
TWO (4 7/8) inch triangles of brown suede large floral. Stitch one brown triangle to a rose triangle. Repeat for the other two triangles.
Now stitch the two triangle patches together.
Now to make the two color triangles in the star points. Fabrics needed for this step are:
ONE (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inch square of rose small floral, ONE (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inch square of Sea Glass Green Medallions.
Mark a diagonal line on the back of the rose and green squares.
Place squares right sides facing and stitch a quarter inch on either side of the marked line.
Cut apart the half square triangles using the marked line. Press patches open.
Cut each half square triangle in half on the diagonal. You will finish with four two color triangles.
Now to make two of the outer corners of the block. You will need the two color triangles and TWO of the sea glass green (4 1/2) X (4 1/2) inch squares.
Now to make the last two outer corners of the block. You will need the two remaining sea glass green (4 1/2) X (4 1/2) inch squares and the FOUR brown suede large floral (5 1/4) triangles.
Stitch the two outer corners you just made to opposite ends of the center block. Layout the patches as shown in the picture, and sew together.

Block TEN

Cutting Instructions for Block Ten

Brown Suede Tone on tone –
Cut SIXTEEN square (2 1/2) X (2 1/2) inches.

Cut TWO squares (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inches.

Sea Glass Green Large Floral –
Cut TWO squares (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inches.
Rose dot –
Cut FIVE squares (4 1/2) X (4 1/2) inches.

Piecing Instructions for Block TEN

The first step is to make four mini snowball blocks for the outer corners.
Fabrics needed for this step are:

FOUR (4 1/2) X (4 1/2) inch squares of rose dot, and
SIXTEEN (2 1/2) X (2 1/2) inch squares of Brown suede.
Mark a diagonal line on the back of the brown suede squares.

Stitch a brown square in opposite corners of a rose dot square.
Sew directly on the line.
Trim away the outer corners leaving a quarter inch seam. Press patches open.
Stitch two more brown suede squares in the remaining corners of the rose dot square.
Trim away the outer corner, and press blocks open.
Next we need to stitch up FOUR quarter square triangles. Fabrics needed here are the
TWO squares of sea glass green measuring (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inches and
TWO squares of brown suede measuring (5 1/4) X (5 1/4) inches.
Mark two diagonal lines on the back of all four squares. Place one of each color right sides together and stitch a quarter inch on each side of the marked line.
Trim the blocks apart and press open to yield FOUR half square triangles.
Place two patches right sides facing, lining up a brown side with green side. This time, stitch on either side of the second diagonal marked line using a quarter inch seam allowance.
Trim the squares apart on the marked line for a second time and press open. The yield will be four quarter square triangle patches.
Lay out blocks as shown in picture. Stitch together in three rows, then stitch the three rows to finish the block.
Block ten DONE!! Can you believe it? We only have two more small blocks to go!!!!

  1. Bradie,
I’m confused on the instructions for the hour glass blocks. For block 9 we cut two squares then stitch the triangles together. For block 10, you have us marking lines on both squares, stitching on either side of the line .. or on either side of both lines? I don’t have the blocks cut and in front of me, maybe it’ll make sense then. Maybe I just need more coffee!! 🙂

  3. Hi Bradie, Your instructions are excellent. Have only quilted for under 2 years and played it safe with squares only. This has been so enjoyable for me, and I
am proud of myself for the results. Who says that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks-I am 57. Have now decided that I will try for the center medallion. I am using scraps and very much enjoy seeing what others are doing. Thank you. Nancy

  9. What size is the center of block nine supposed to measure? It looks like it needs to be trimmed down, but I don’t want to trim too much.
